I CAN'T BE PART OF YOUR REVOLUTION

Featuring a dialogue between visual artist Jing Feng and contemporary theater director Huang Fangling.

Through life performance installation, painting and video works, this
hybrid project aims to examine universal goals and their changing nature. The mountain becomes a stage for absurd theatrics wherein the rituals and ideals that we are programmed to adopt as our own go awry, ultimately leading us to the artist's maxim: "I can't be part of your revolution, I will make my own."

Years of studying Chinese culture have led New York artist Ross Lewis to develop a distinct visual language by incorporating aesthetic and philosophical sensibilities of Chinese artistic traditions into his installations, paintings and sculpture. In his recent “Rope Paintings”, the artist departs from his training in the Chinese brush to forge a unique and articulated line using rope and string saturated with ink juxtaposed with collage on paper.

Qiu Deshu is a Shanghai mixed-media abstract artist born in 1948. He is best known for the role he played in founding the unofficial “Grass” or “Cao Cao” artists’ group in 1979 with the intention to break from the bonds of the institutional system of art prevalent during the Mao era. He did so by emphasizing on individualism, integrity and personal artistic language without being militant.

Ross Lewis and Qiu Deshu first met when Lewis was curating exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art in New York in the early 80’s. He visited Qiu’s studio in Shanghai at that time to see artworks firsthand and they only recently met up again, rekindling their friendship. Their paintings spring from a deep understanding of traditional ink painting and a desire to find their individual expression and response to that tradition.

AGAINST THE WIND - a Solo Show for Maya KRAMER
Maya Kramer’s work functions as a haunting antidote to the often hyperbolic and saccharine version of life portrayed in popular culture. Beginning from a concern for humanity’s precarious relationship to its environment, the artist uses surprising materials to render images from nature. In this most recent body of work, Ms. Kramer continues her exploration of coal as a medium, rending feathers and branches in coal and arranging them into various tableaux. Both foreboding and poetic these works speak to the vulnerable state of the natural world.

The impetus for this body of work stems from a doubt as to whether or not humans have a soul, and if they do, how one would go about proving this soul’s existence. To that end, I took representations of various gods, Buddhas, and religious figures from different places and time periods, and deconstructed, melted, burned, and carved their form such that they became mere echos of the forms they originally portrayed. Paradoxically, it is through diminishing and transforming these types of figures that the meaning they symbolize is more easily accessed. Jin Shan

Li Wenguang is known for his highly subjective and idiosyncratic works, many of which have been based on notions of pseudoscientific equations, personal diaries, and dream interpretation. Continuing his exploration of these themes, his recent works are delving further into the territory of the subconscious. Li, who is a completely self-taught artist, presents his works on rice paper mounted to traditional Chinese silk scrolls, using a combination of pen, brush, tea, ink, acrylic and oil paint. People who recognize the name Zhou Haiying immediately associate it with his father, Lu Xun, one of the major Chinese writers of the 20th century who is considered by many to be the founder of modern Chinese literature.

"Through my lens you can see my father's influence on me, from the old society to the founding of the People's Republic of China and to China's reform and opening-up. I use my lens to reflect the changing times by presenting people in daily life." Zhou Haiying, 1950

Likewise, Agnieszka Cwiek - Polish freelance photographer since 2006 who studied in Poland and England and who lives in China since 2010 - is interested in reality not fantasy. She photographs everything she sees, wherever she is, with the intention to show reality as it is, capturing images of 21st Century China, just as Zhou Haiying did 65 years earlier.

BLOOD LINE - Works by A. Slabbynck and SUN Hongbin
“Annelies Slabbynck creates sculptural works that leave a deep impression in your mind. Her work is characterized by a simple, yet essential visual language, wherein she expresses universal themes such as life and death, sickness and health, growth and transformation processes.
Slabbynck works with many forms of physicality, sometimes via familiar or antique materials, although often in fragmented and abstract manner. She includes clay and textiles in an original and experimental way, making good use of the rich symbolic value of these materials. Her work also triggers associations and personal interactions with everyday objects. It leads the viewer to reflect on sustainability, craftmanship and ritual character of objects. She seeks a return to older utensils from China and the Western popular culture, two cultures that she knows how to bring in synthesis in an interesting manner” says Isabelle De Baets, ART,12.02.2009 .

Sun Hongbin also explores associations and family ties in his work. Over the years, his oeuvre has explored the quirks and idiosyncrasies which passed down through the generations of any family tree. He does this in a very unique style, clearly influenced by 18th and 19th century western oil paintings.

Barbara Edelstein’s sculptures and mixed media installations embody the message they convey: culture depends on nature; culture reshapes nature to render it more readily accessible. What can I do to attract you?

Group Show featuring works by Lin Jingjing, Virginie Lerouge-Knight, Benoit&Bo, Island6, Chen Hangfeng, Fabrice Guyot, Mao Yu, Tao Hongjing and Xu Zhifeng

“What can I do to attract you?" On a day to day basis we find ourselves trying to attract somebody. Our intent may be conscious or unconscious. Whether it be in love, business or pleasure we invariably find ourselves seeking to engage an individual, a group or the general public at large.
There are many ways in which we express our desire to attract: some are outrageous, some are crazy, some are intimate, some are sexy, some are discreet! Strangely our success in attracting attention depends on our own personal degree of self-confidence and belief, rather than the object of our desire.
It is our, education, culture and environment that determine our most daring endeavours. Often it is the Artist, who is most courageous and most creative in the allure of an audience. In this special exhibition presented by Studio Rouge in association with front line contemporary, Chinese and French artists audaciously explore the art of attraction!

As an undergraduate in the Fine Arts Department of the Shanghai Drama Institute, ZHANG Jian-Jun studied oil painting in the standard realist genres. Outside of the classroom, however, he created abstract paintings and works in mixed media on canvas. Five such works were included in the ’83 Experimental Painting Exhibition at Fudan University; four of them were criticized for being abstract, with one—in mixed media—singled out as “strange.” The exhibition was closed after a day and a half due to the newly launched Anti-Spiritual Pollution campaign. In 1989 Zhang moved to the United States and turned to working with ink on paper, media he had employed prior to attending art school. Investigating the fundamental qualities of ink, he created ink painting installations, installations incorporating liquid ink, and paintings combining ink and oil paint. Becoming interested in ways of noting the passage of time in art, for many years he has produced videos, installations, and paintings under the theme of Vestiges of a Process. Vestiges of a Process: Flowing Water and Water ink paintings capture a moment by focusing in on the water’s ever-changing surface, represented by a few deft ink strokes. Touches of oil paint added to the abbreviated ink markings react to changes in ambient light, and vividly suggest the glint of light on flowing water.

The Art of Existence - Annelies Slabbynck's Solo Show
Annelies creates a setting that through the act of "intruding and involvement", several emotions of amazement as well as melancholy of the past and present are awakened and recognized. By creating a "new reality" in a recognizable atmosphere, the viewer is able to walk through his own personal memories, confronted by conflicts between today and the past. By reconstruction of this new reality, the viewer discovers his "own reality" again.

Han Bing's "Urban Amber" and "Theater of Modernisation" works are being exhibited at Yong Kang Gallery, Shanghai.

Avant-garde artist Han Bing reflects on the impact of economic development in China on nature and on the the working class who are behind today's "miracle". Using images taken from traditional socialist art, he subverts these in modern settings showing children, workers and peasants set against the tableau of today's China.

RECIPE - An installation by ZHANG Lansheng
front line contemporary is exhibiting installation works by ZHANG Lansheng:
An ongoing project which Lansheng started in the mid 1990s, the RECIPE installation consists of a minimum of 12 ready-made mouse traps. The mouse trap is painted with a small "concertina recipe" attached to the bait hook of the trap. Each "recipe" is a chapter containing a quotation from world-renowned figures like politicians, philosophers, artists and scientists.

Lansheng was born in Shanghai and received his art training in the city before migrating to Australia in 1989. His works were exhibited in many countries and collected by some of the major art museums internationally (such as V&A, UK). He has worked in a curatorial and advisory role at the Shanghai Art Museum and a number of public art museums and galleries overseas since the late 1980s. He holds a Masters Degree in Art History from the Australian National University and is now a PhD candidate at the Research School-HRC in the ANU.

front line contemporary will exhibit works by CAI Hongshuo, HE Saibang and DONG Wensheng to celebrate the opening of its new space in Yongjia Lu, 588 in Shanghai.

Born in 1979, Cai Hongshuo currently lives in the countryside in Zhejiang where he leads the life of the contemplative recluse, fishing and observing nature, using photography to focus on the inner world of all things and beings.

55 year old HE Saibang's exquisite work has achieved excellence thanks to his ability to put his own very personal visual experience of the world on paper.

DONG Wensheng’s conceptual photography uses the natural and architectural elements of Chinese Gardens and other natural landscapes as a stage setting to insert objects the viewer does not expect to see. Framed by background lighting, the artist creates an almost magical space for the viewer to contemplate beauty, intimacy, mystery and engage in a deeper philosophical consideration of the value of life.

Please come to 588 Yongjia Lu to check on our new space and enjoy the art show.

front line contemporary will be featuring recent Chinese Ink on paper works by CAI Ming. Cai Ming’s recent series of paintings comes out of an inspired moment in Shanghai, when the artist viewed the sprawling city from the top of Jinmao tower. These works are imbued with the same feeling of awe, the overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, produced by this grand view of the megalopolis that he witnessed that day. Always fascinated by color and form, the classically trained Cai, succeeded in translating a traditional medium into a contemporary subject. The resulting body of works demonstrate Cai’s effort to redefine classical Chinese landscape painting to express modern-day urban landscape. A cocktail will be held on December 6th at our space - Willowbrook (Green Hills) Villa #327. Tel: 13918119712

LIU Zheng and ZHANG Hui Contemporary Art Exhibition and Sale
The inaugural exhibition of our gallery took place in January 2007 and doubled as a fundraising event for the critically ill toddler of artists LIU Zheng and ZHANG Hui in the Beijing art community.
LIU Zheng first made an impact on the Chinese art scene in the late 90s with his gorgeously 'kitschy' beaded tapestries, depicting Chinese yuan/RMB notes of money, famous movie scenes, and several Buddhist statues, all in millions of individually applied beads. This exhibition, however, highlighted several of his later oil paintings.
ZHANG Hui is a well known oil painter in China, as is shown through her treatment of the famous 'Beijing Wawa' series, including several fibreglass figures in spashy colors such as orange, electric blue, red, pink and others.

front line contemporary donated proceeds from this event to provide medically necessary treatment for this special child in the US in February 2007.
